MIL indicator in 01 Jetta 1.8t

My wife was driving the car today when she felt the car buck once, then the MIL light came on and stayed home. She limped it home (about 3 km's) at less than 30 km/hr.

I took a look at it tonight and the light stays on, the engine idles at it's normal RPM's, but the exhaust is coming out very "puffy" for lack of a better word, and there seems to be a pretty strong smell of gas in the exhaust.

Any ideas? 118K, have only ever ran 91 octane in it.

Thanks, Glenn

Could be any of a 100 or so issues that caused your MIL to come on. With out knowing the fault code nothing I'm lost!

She said it was running normally, but had looked in the manual and saw she was supposed to run it at reduced power.

When I see the check engine light, I get freaked out thinking it is something catastrophic. I noticed that the manual said you could still drive the car? Running that rich, I really don't plan on driving it for sake of ruining the catalytic.

It had been running perfectly until then, as we had just put about 500K on it the night before, and I had just been driving it 15 minutes before she had it.

I guess I will have to wait until tomorrow to get my mechanic to look at it.
