Overheating 88 Passat 18

A988 Passat GT 1800. Started to overheat, temp over 110 C and flashing lamp. Bottom hose cold top hose hot - changed thermostat. Symptom repeated, so removed thermostat. Car still over heats, fan not kicking in on slow speed until overheating. Replaced thermoswitch, fan still does not kick in until overheating, even then not always. Water level correct, so no leaks, heater works while engine running but goes cold shortly after engine off - suggests pump running. If short out fan so always on slow then it does not overheat even when driving arround town. Any suggestions, could temp guage be reading wrong i.e. temp sensor knackered or radiator partially blocked near thermosswitch. Both these difficult to confirm. Please help am getting fed up lifting bonnet and shorting out thermoswitch each time I drive the car. Oil temperature sometimed in 80's or less even though temp guage near 110.

possible, yes. Try to swap sensors with a VW were the gauge works ok?

Sounds like it would be possible, on the other hand: never hear of such occurence.

Assuming your Passat got the water/oil-heat exchanger aka "oil-cooler" on the oil filter flange this would point to just the gauge being off. Another possible cause: Bad head gasket lets exhaust gas bubbles into the system - air is a very bad thermal conductor. Been there done that. Did you try letting the engine idle with the reservoir cap loose - because of system not pressurizing coolant will start to boil at 100°C, fan should be running at that temp or a bit earlier.

Do you have normal heat level coming from the heater inside the car?

Normal temperature from heater, oil filter has heat exchanger/cooler pipes
