Rabbit charging problem

Bosch alternator seems to work fine when the car is first started, sending 14 volts back to the battery, which matches the voltage in the wire that goes to the dash light. When I take the car out for a short spin of just a few minutes and come back, then check the charge with the motor still running, it's down to 12 volts and the the voltage in the dash light wire drops to 11v. When I shut the vehicle off, then turn the ignition on, the dash light won't come on. If I wait 20 minutes and try it again, the light comes back on and all is well with the charging circuit until it's again placed under load.

Is this a classic case of a bad alternator or is there a chance it's something else ?

thanks
