sunroof in 96 passat

OK, the wierdest thing happened today. I went to close the sunroof on my

96 passat glx, and it slid forward, no problems, but THEN it started sliding back by itself! It slid and slid into the roof, further than usual and then POP made a banging noise and stopped.

Now, when I push the button nothing happens except the light in the sunroof switch dims.

The sunroof has never had any problems before today - no clicking to warn me that some mechanical fault was coming.

Anybody have any idea what might have happened or...gulp... if it's toast? I can't budge the thing forward. Is there a trick for sliding the thing into position? It's not raining tonight, but...

I am not 100% sure but if you can open the cover over the sunroof motor you might find a hand crank. Then you might be able to insert the hand crank into the gear/motor and close the sunroof. Do you still have the owner's manual?

I do and I did, and the darned thing closed! For some reason it wouldn't last night and seems to have fixed itself after some thinking in the cold. I disconnected the switch and was then able to crank the roof forward pretty smoothly (whew!).

Reconnected and the thing works perfectly again, forward backward up and down. Freaky. I thought it was history.

You are lucky. I was about to say it sounds like you broke a cable-maybe you should play the lottery tomorrow?

I've had the sunroof in my QSW out and apart so many times it's pathetic. A VW sunroof is a joy-as long as it works. But a PO really molested mine before I got it and it has now finally evolved into the Anti-Christ. At present I can get it to retract fully and re-close with the correct sequence of various pressures and tugging but I can not get it to do the "pop up".

I'm SO tempted to just weld the damn thing shut and be done with it.
