Yellow substance in engine oil

Hello,

this sunday i checked my engine oil level. When I pulled out the dipstick I saw a small yellow substance in the oil. When I rubbed it between my fingers I could feel that it was not solid but it actually dissolved. (It is kind of hart to describe) Does anyone know what it could be? Thank you

Is it like a foam? If so that happens in the winter when you don't drive far enough to dry out the engine. Open the oil cap and look at the inside of that.

It was not foam, it was kind of griny.

An emulsion of oil and condensation (water) can get whipped up into a type of non-edible mayo, which is what Jo Bo was talking about.

Getting the car out onto the road for a good long trip (heating the oil past the boiling point of water for a good while) will evaporate the stuff out of your motor oil.

Short trips around town are of ten the culprit, but you should consider whether you have a gasket leak and the oil and coolant are mixing together.

It would help some to know what type car you are talking about, how old is it, other relevant bits of info, etc etc.

I have this also on my 97 Golf 1.8. I cleaned it off the inside of the oil filler cap and I am waiting to see if it comes back. I travel 120km highway every day, so it is not due to city driving. I do not see the coolant level going down, but I am scared it may be a gasket leak.

"Griny"? Is that what you said? ;^p Most likely it's water. where it's coming from needs checking. If it's alot, you may need a head gasket. Sometimes you can leave the radiator cap loose (first "click"), thereby releasing pressure & drive the car for awhile without major problems. However, if this is VW's system like my Cab - with the screw-on cap on the remote tank - don't know if that'll work or not... HTH, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"
