2002 XLT - shudder when turning from a standing start

2002 XLT 42,000 primarily highway miles

Recently developed a "shudder" that seems to come from the rear when turning from a standing start. (Think turning left after stopping at a stop sign). The shudder seems to be worse when turning left than when turning right, although it does seem to be present to a lesser extent when turning right as well. There is no shudder when going straight from a standing start, nor when turning if you are already moving (think of coasting through that same stop sign). The shudder lessens and then disappears as the turn is negotiated and the drive path straightens out. There are no obvious leaks anywhere and the vehicle has been well-maintained (oil, filters, brakes inspected, tires rotated, etc.).

Ideas as to the cause/solution welcomed.

It's silly but I'll mention it anyway - is it possible that you have it in 4 wheel high?

Not silly at all. I've tried switching from 4WD auto to 4WD high and back to 4 WD auto to no avail. Good thought though. :-)

The shudder is normal with a traction lock differential. All good 4X4's will do this when power is applied in a sharp turn.

I've seen a similar shudder several times... mostly on Escapes.... purging the PS system with vacuum seems to do the trick for most of them..

Then I must have gotten a different 2002 EB. Zero problems, 'cept for a DPFE valve. Perfect paint, perfect alignments, no problems.

Mine *is* a hell of a damn fine car.

All,

Thanks for the input. I'll try to address the questions/suggestions raised:

MB: Hasn't been to "...the dealer for the rear end "whine" and the "clunk" noises." as there are no noticeable noises.

Big Shoe: "I had the problem Jim talks about after having the front brakes rebuilt on my '99." I've had no brake work done.

UNION DEPOT: "The shudder is normal with a traction lock differential. All good 4X4's will do this when power is applied in a sharp turn." Understood - my 1989 Suburban did this when in 4x4, although it was perceived more in the front end than in the rear. My 2002 XLT did not do this for the first 41,500 or so miles.

Jim Warman: "I've seen a similar shudder several times... mostly on Escapes.... purging the PS system with vacuum seems to do the trick for most of them.."

Would I feel this coming from the rear if it were air in the PS system? Or perhaps I am not correctly perceiving the location of the shudder - in which case air in the PS system is a possibility.

The maintenance items that were done most recently were change of oil/filter, air filter, and tire rotation - all done by me. I believe I first noticed the shudder roughly 2 weeks after the above maintenance. This is not the bouncing of unbalanced tires - I know that sensation all too well.

Thanks.
