Passenger side airbag cover

My kid dropped a coin behind the door covering the passenger side airbag, and it's rattling around and driving me crazy. Is it safe to open this cover? If so, any special precautions to take? Can it be closed again or is it a replacement item? Damn kids!

IIRC, the airbag cover cannot be removed and replaced.... it is part of the airbag assembly and any attempt to remove it separately will likely compromise it's restraints (it is tied into the assembly in such a way as to avoid becoming a projectile during deployment).

As always, I cannot make you stop working on your own airbags BUT I will remind you that these are a pyrotechnic or explosive device.... repairs and adjustments are best left to those familiar with and trained in proper procedures. I work on these systems quite often and I refuse to become complacent when handling them....

You can't just remove the cover. The whole airbag is an assembly. The cover is riveted to a steel frame, which contains the bag, and a propellent unit.

The whole thing is quite easy to remove by going up through the glove box (fold the catches in and flip it all the way down. ) and then there are 2 bolts (10mm if memory serves) that hold the whole thing in.

If you remove the bolts, then the unit will slip out, and you can either unplug it to take it completly out, or maybe you will be able to get the coin. Contrary to what some may tell you, an airbag isn't a "bomb" waiting to go off if you touch it wrong. it requires an electrical charge to be sent to the deployment unit in order to set it off. you can't deploy one just by removing it, or jostling it around. Of course what you DONT want to do is to send any voltage to the unit, or it's sensors.

But don't just try to pry the cover off the front. It ain't gonna happen, and the most you will do is to gouge it up a bit! If it bugs you that much, just pull the unit out and shake the coin out.
