Transmission Issue

My 1997 Explorer XLT [2 Wheel Drive] has 75K miles and again it did something strange with the transmission. This has happened before.

I was in 'first' gear and when I accelerated it would not shift until I released the gas pedal. The reason I noticed is because the RPM was like 4800 in 'first' I was like. "Umm shift."

So I pulled over and moved the gear shifter to park then back to drive. Pressed the gas and it was like it was NOT in gear, like being in neutral the car just revved up. So I moved the gear shifter to park and back into drive, and still just revved up. Then I tried going into reverse and then into drive, and that works and seem to correct the problem.

It almost seems like the transmission is not fully engaging and when I go into reverse and back into drive it "catches" the gears. Also note, this is not a common occurrence, only happens sometimes. The majority of the time the car runs great. Any suggestions, comments, and advice would be appreciated.

The transmission fluid is full, although I must admit, a tad dirty though.

Thanks.

Justin, I don't know of any way to make transmission fluid that is a "tad dirty" sound good. Dark fluid is a bad sign... dark fluid that smells bad is a real bad sign.... Sorry to say, it sounds like there is a trans o'haul in your future...
