03 Ranger steering wheel

I have a small problem with removing the steering wheel cover so I can repair the cruise controler (3 button controler on right of the steering wheel). The 2 tabs are broken that hold the small 3 button console on. In order to replace this I will have to remove the cover over the air bag. Any suggestions on how to get that off without distroying or setting the air bag off will be helpful. Thank you Larry

You'll need to disconnect the battery for at least an hour before you get anywhere near the air bag.

The airbag should be held in place by 4 screws on the instrumentn cluster side of the wheel. Take the screws out and you can remove the airbag as an assembly that includes the plastic cover.

If you remove the airbag AND set the ignition to ON, you will trigger an Airbag Fault that will require a technician to reset. The airbag faults are fatal, they never go away until after service is rendered and a special diagnostic tool is used to reset the flag that marks the fault. You and I know that there is no real fault, but the computer circuit design is such that the airbag is a safety-of-flight item, and when a fault is triggered for any reason, the fault requires professional attention.
