2001 Rodeo Mode sensor(?) & Wiper issues

'01 Rodeo with intermittent transmission issues. Occasionally when gear select is moved from Park to any other gear the gear indicator light (between the speedo and tach) will not illuminate. When it does this the transmission shifts erradically (very hard 1-2 shift especially). Sometimes wiggling the select lever will correct (light comes on tranny shifts as advertised). Other times the car has to be turned off and allowed to rest for 5-10 minutes. Local (somewhat) stealer says that it is the Range/Mode(?) sensor and will cost ~$350 to replace. Anyone have experience with this? Can the sensor be changed by the average shadetree mechanic?

Also, wipers will not work in intermittent mode. When intermittent is selected the wiper will travel about 4-6 inches then stop. Must select "On" mode to complete wiper travel and select "off" at the lowest point to prevent wiper from stopping in the middle of the windshield. Read somewhere that there is a relay somewhere near the glovebox that is the culprit. Forgot where that information came from. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I was just wondering what you found out to be the problem with the transmission. I have a 2000 that is having the type of problem. Your help would be much appreciated.
