Seicento: How long do cats last?

Am attempting to replace exhaust system on 2001 Fiat Seicento. Has hole in both rear and intermediate sections. I believe it is the original system. The cat looks OK but should it be replaced at the same time or could it go on for another year or two??

The intermediate section has a tubular section like a small silencer but covered in criss cross mesh - What is this??

catalytic converters would usually only be replaced if they physically fail. the mesh bit is a flexible coupling.

OK that suits me

Are they quite common now? (or does this engine move a lot?) I've never seen one before.

My wife used to work in a place that designed and made the stainless steel flexible section. They are required to prevent parts of the 'cat' self destructing due to exhaust movement, vibration and heat expansion.

Oh I see - so cats are not as good as silencer boxes at transmitting force perhaps?? I haven't noticed a flexible coupling on my Passat and see that failure can be a problem with aftermarket cats for them:

I think YWF it is the vibration rattling the ceramic in the cat. which is the problem.
