Possible new car

Found a perfect one. Mazda MX5 1.8i S 1998. 65000 miles. MoT till late Nov, tax till April. Hard top included. Up for £3900 2 miles up the road. Had a quick look in the dark and the owner took the other half out in it. She loved it and it all seemed pretty genuine. He's given us first refusal so we're going round on friday to look in the light, and hopefully buy it.

Well chuffed!

Oh, and its had a new cambelt and new front brakes(incl 1 caliper), and rear calipers

Excellent. The cambelt is an expensive job at the main dealer; they designed the engine to look like it has a chain!

1.8 is a good engine, too. Still a little low-geared for motorway driving (the 6 speed sorts that out), but it sounds like a much, much better bet than any MGF.

Havent even looked at the engine TBH, will do that in the light. The bloke said he's always taken it to a one-man independant mazda specialist, which is a few miles down the road. So its also good to know there a competant mechanic about if theres something that i dont want to do/ cant be bothered to do in the future.

My thoughts exactly!!

Middle aged man, that was fed up of not being able to get his golf clubs in it! :)

Excellent, and one with the proper sized engine, too.

Can't remember, but is a 1998 car one with pop-up lamps or a MkII?

'98s are all Mk IIs, at least the ones I've seen.

I prefer the popups myself.

Same here, but that sounds a cracker for the money.

In news: snipped-for-privacy@individual.net, Carl Gibbs decided to enlighten our sheltered souls with a rant as follows

See if the water pump has been changed. They have a habit of seizing and breaking the cambelt.
