MX5.

Picked up a N reg MX5 for a mate yesterday, has reminded me what a great car they are to drive. It's a 1.6 and it's basic bar alloys...

Best way to get a bit more go out of it? What's the usual path - it's got a K&N kit with it (not fitted, owner bought the kit and never got round to it) which will make it sound faster...

He's thinking about getting different alloys too - I think bad idea unless they are lighter - what about lighter discs as well?

Go the same way as my workmate and turbo it. He did it all himself, no kits or anything and he's more than happy to tell you all the ins and outs. He's got a Greddy fuel management unit (as reported here before, heh), and just bought some Supra injectors, though he's not fitted them yet.

He's also just set up a MX-5 tuning site/shop but I can't remember the URL. I'll ask him when I next speak to him (I'm off work now due to becoming a dad again...) and I'll post it here.

AFAIK they all come with alloys.

Bleurgh.

Your options are mainly supercharging it or turbo'ing it. The GReddy turbo kit has a reputation of being a tad cheap & cheerful, the HKS one is supposed to be a lot better but is more expensive.

The other option is to get a supercharger (Jackson Racing make one, there are a couple of other suppliers, too).

AFAIR the engine can easily take 5-6 psi of boost on standard injectors, anything bigger and you're looking at bigger injectors and a decent ECU.

Nope, they didnt. My mates got a set of standard MX5 steelies that he uses for autotests.

Why did you buy a 1.6 and then want more power? Fit the K&N, that'll sort it out!

I didn't. He did.

Mini Cooper charger off the bay?

Not in the UK Market. Steels were standard on even the Mk 2.5 1.6s.
