Won't Idle, low RPMs. Whats up?

Hey there group!

I have a 2000 GT with 42k on it. When I start it it keeps stalling. After awhile it will stay idling, but at about 500 RPM.

Awhile back it would do the same thing, but kick in normally after about 5 minutes. Now, it just about putters out no matter how long it's been running.

I am thinking it's some type of sensor, but thats as far as my knowledge takes me. There are no "Check Engine" lights coming on or anything.

I have a MAC cold air kit on it, and I recharged the filter, so I don't think it is clogged. There is a smell of fuel that is unordinary.

Any ideas?

TIA! Shane

Clean MAF, IAT/ACT & check TPS.

MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor IAT/ACT = Intake Air Temperature / Air Charge Temperature TPS = Throttle Position Sensor

You said you recently recharged your K&N air filter, so you may have gotten too much oil on the filter & some may have gotten onto the MAF.. take a q-tip & some electrical parts cleaner & clean the MAF wire. The oil will throw off the reading & cause the car to run like crap.

Ok, I think I fiuged out the abbreviations:

Mass Airflow Sensor Intake Air Temperature Sensor ACT???? Throttle Position Temperature

How did I do? I am a network engineer, so I can throw around some TLA's too! lol

I am thinking about going the store tomorrow and buying a OBD II Scanner. My Durango is throttling a bit too, so this might be a good investment.

Hey thanks Mike!

I will give that a stab tomorrow. This is a new arena for me. I can tear apart my 88 Ram 250 with no problem, thses newer cars have never given me a problem, so I have never had to learn~!

Now, it's time....

Personally I wouldn't touch it with a Q tip ( or anything) Just use the spray contact cleaner and blast the hell out of the MAS wire ( Mass Airflow Sensor) BTW Brake Cleaner is the same chemical as the electrical contact cleaner and comes in a bigger can for the same price usually! StuK

Some ppl are anal. I'm not. I never broke mine & I cleaned it many times. Try cleaning w/out a q-tip first... and if it works, awesome. If not, try cleaning with a q-tip very gently.

MAF is mass air sensor ACT is air charge temperature TPS is throtle position sensor

IAT does not exist (ACT does this job)

The MAF may be the culprit but I would first focus on the IAC (idle air control) mounted on the throtle body. It controls air for idle. If its stuck closed or failed, you'll have trouble with idle.

It's not the size of the Q-tip that matters....

Figured it out!

I checked the TPS, MAF, and the IAC. Couldn't find the ACT. The IAC looked suspect, so I tested it. I got the correct voltage to it, so I replaced it for $79.00. Runs like a scalded dog again.

I used a Code Reader and it pointed right to it! Cool device!

Thanks for all the help!
