1995 900se turbo convertible clutch cable. How to adjust?

Hi all,

Guess when it rains it pours. A couple of weeks ago I ended up forking out $160 for a used driver's seat belt because the one I had stopped telescoping. Today, on my way home I lost the clutch! At first, it seemed that it was intermittent, and then first gear came back. Howevever, when I got to the light at the intersection, the peddle dropped out and now there doesn't seem to be any "tightness" at all.

After the AAA guy towed me home, he had me pop the hood and looked with a flashlight at what he thought was the clutch cable. It looks intact, however, there is a small shread of plastic sitting below it (about 3mm long, and several hairs thick), and he said there was plenty of play in it. He left by suggesting that I should try adjusting it myself before taking it to a shop.

First question is how realistic from my description is it that its simply the clutch cable? Secondly, if the cable is not broken, how does one go abouts adjusting it? (For that matter how can I tell if its busted or not?). Is it just as easy to replace the cable as it is to adjust the currently installed one? I'd hate to adjust it, only to have it happen again.

Greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Robert
