C900 APC Solenoid wiring

Been getting intermittent base boost recently.

So I checked out the solenoid, and discovered the insulation on the wiring was breaking up, and had the consistency of wax.

Using insulation tape, when the weather was cooler it worked fine.

But now after driving in stop start traffic, with the warmer weather, the insulatiing tape is starting to soften within about 40 mins, and I only get base boost again. I imagine I'm getting a short somewhere when the glue on the insulation is slipping as it softens.

Checking it out once it has stood for about an hour and the solenoid works fine again.

Last night coming home in the evening rush on a still very warm day, I had full boost, but 15 minutes later after crawling I was back to base for the last 15 mins of the journey.

This morning coming into work, I had full boost all the way to work, even though I crawled in traffic but the air temps were a lot cooler at

8AM.

What is the best way to heatshield the wiring? I guess at some point I'm going to have to splice in a partial new harness arround the turbo/battery area, because of the wiring getting oldand brittle due to heat, but I don't want it to go the same way.

Cut the wires as close to the apc body as you can, leaving only 10mm or so to work with. Solder on replacement silicone insulated wires. Insulate your soldered join with heatshrink sleeve. Seal the wire exit area with your choice of goo - covering the heatshrink sleeve. I like to use PU for the last step - never let me down.

You mean the 2 pin grey connector that comes out of the solenoid?

The harness had lost most of it's original insulation, almost all the way to the two pin plug., and as far down almost, to the where it joins the bundle near the 3 pin connector below the drivers side headlight.

This the APC Solenoid I'm talking about on top of the radiator with the

2 pin plug, not the APC itself, which is nice and cool under the backseat.

Yes, sorry, that's what I mean.

Mine was the same.

I know!

cheers.

Yeah the original slack rubber sleaving was intact arround the bundle, so I had to cut it to get to the wiring which is when I discovered just how bad the problem was. didn't see quite how grotty the insulation was until, I tried to tape it, and the rest just crumbled like candle wax.

Ended up removing what I had to, leaving some so I can see which wire is which. Then taping each wire individually right up to the connector, then taping the original rubber cover back in place.

just checking. ;)
