questions from new owner of saab 95 900 SE convertible 2.0

Hello -

I am a new Saab owner - have been a VW owner till now but the 95

900 SE convertible caught my fancy... car has 130K here are a few probems I have noticed.

- Windshield washer - it does not seem to work, examined the T connectors/valves there seems to be nothing coming out. Looks like the motor to me - I belive it is on the same fuse as the wipers and the wipers work fine.

- There seems to be an oil leak somewhere as you can see oil in the engine compartiment and after a long highway run it burns on the exaust. Smells and smokes really bad - I have tighted the valcover gasket - what else could it be - there is no water in the oil.

- On bumps the car makes a knocking noise on the right side - is it the shocks? the strut mount? I know this is a small description what can I say hit a bump and drong drong feels like something wants to fall of.

- In general the suspention seems a bit hard - is that the design or are the parts just ageing?

- The adjustment on the headlight for the up- down is a very small knob that I cannot turn with my fingers - is there a tool for this?

- The cigarete lighter is stuck - common?

Does the motor work when activated? If so, it is likely one of the valves. Failure for these is fairly common.

Clean the engine thoroughly with an engine cleaner like Gunk, then watch for the leak to show its origin.

Check the bolts on the torque arm, if it has one, and other components (shocks, swar bar, etc.). The left torque arm on my 9000 was slightly loose and it sounded like someone beating on the car with a hammer.

Probably both. Rubber components in body and suspension harden which stiffens everything and increases noise.

Congratulations!

As another poster noted these are usually the check valves. Relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. Main one is the T you noted. Some folks have rebuilt them with latex glove material. I just ordered mine from eeurparts.com.

I've replaced a couple washer motors too. Try aftermarket, the dealer wants a bunch for them. It mounts on the washer reservoir. Access by (re)moving the left front wheel well cover.

My 95 900S, with the NA (normally aspirated, i.e. non-turbo) 2.3l engine did this around 115K miles. Cause was a torn rear main seal on the engine. Oil leaked out between the engine and transaxle. Made a real mess in the engine compartment and it smoked after a long run. I have a 5 speed so I had the clutch replaced at the same time. I've heard that it is not uncommon. It's still dry now at 155K miles.

I don't want to say that you don't have a problem, but the front ends of these cars tend to make more noise than most. There was a recall that replaced a lot of the front end. You might want to find out if it was done to your car.

I also had a 3" piece of the right spring break off. It was the flat part on the very bottom. The piece clattered around on the bottom strut plate and made a real racket! I didn't do anything but remove it from the plate. Hasn't seemed to affect the ride but I'll probably replace the spring when I eventually replace the (still original) front shocks.

I've never needed to adjust this. Are you sure it needs it?

Also, check your serpentine belt. If there is any question replace it and the idler pulley(s). It's cheap insurance. There's a thread on the NG900 forum on saabnet.com that describes the use of a shorter belt that eliminates one pulley. It's how the newer models are built and it makes for one less part to fail. Plus the belt is only $15 or so at AutoZone.
