Saab 900 SE SRS question

My car is a 1997 Saab 900 SE v6. Today I had a problem: after I start the car, the SRS warning light as well as the central warning (!) light are on. Does it means my airbag system has problem? I did not have any accident at all before. And the SRS light was off as it should be after starting. If I need to have the car checked, do I have to go to the dealer, or any generous auto repair mechanic can solve this problem?

Thank you for any suggestion.

The SRS warning light is on because the SRS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) has detected a fault. The airbags may not work in the event of an accident.

The light will not go off until it is turned off. You will need to see a shop with a TECH II. The TECH II can talk to the SRS ECU and retrieve a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The DTC will indicate the area of the SRS system where the fault has occurred.

There are many possible causes for an SRS failure, but one of the more common faults is the ignition switch. DTC B1227 and B1228 are the codes that will be set.

Good luck, Steve
