smell of gas in cabin

We've recently begun to notice a distinct smell of gas in the cabin of my wife's 1990 900. Can anyone give me suggestions on the first things to check before I take it in to the shop to have them drop the fuel tank and check everything over. She's noticed a drop in gas mileage also but all tune-ups, maintenance are up to date.

Thanks.

Drop in gas mileage is due to a leak. could be minor I would get it checked asap. I had the same problem on my 1992 saab 900 a smell of gas in the cabin. The problem was a hose that goes to fuel pressure regulator. I was told by saab they did have some problems with that hose. good luck papa

There are several things that might indicate - it might be that your pump gasket has shifted or cracked on the top of the tank.. Or (and I don't know if SAAB was steel tank for that year) - the top of your tank has rusted and weeps a bit when topped off.. Could also be your vent line and or filler tube have come away or that your return line is starting to leak..

Basically - you need to drop the tank and check it over as that kind of problem can get really out of hand in the right circumstances..

You can remove parts of the boot floor very easily and pull back the fabric to take a look. That would be a good start. How is your mixture, by the way? Is it overly rich? That would lead to a fuel smell, especially at idling and slow traffic.

Sometimes when you overfill the tank you will get a smell until the gas GOES DOWN. I have a new 05 and if I continue to pump after the pump shuts off I get a smell in the cabin for about 30 miles. If I just let the pump shut off which is what the manual says to do I have no smell. good luck papa
