Actually, the Yaris pre-ceded the Echo. I wish we'd gotten the Yaris in the first place, since it's a hatch, but I still love my Echo

If it preceeded the echo, was it the basis for one of the scion models?

Marketing folks, marketing. Yaris (Europe), Vitz (Japan), Echo (Colonies such as the USA, Canada and Australia). Essentially the same car. However, only the sedan version was available at first in the Colonies. Then all the Colonies, except the USA, got the hatchback Echo, simply because the USA already had the similar Scion hatchback model.
Starting in Spring 2006, all countries will have either the Yaris or the Vitz. So the Yanks will have TWO (2) hatchback models to choose from (Scion and Yaris).
A sedan version is in the works and will replace the Echo sedan. It will have a different name, just like the one in Japan does. Although the name will be different.
To add to the confusion, the cars are actually different, depending on what country they are sold in. Canada's have larger bumpers and always on hedlights, for example.
So much for an automobile version of Coke (aka Coca Cola).
