1998 Idle Problem

1998 XLE V6 (70K miles)

When I drive at speed above 55 mph for 20 or 30 minutes and let off the gas the engine speed fluctuates about 500 rpm and feels like it is going to stall at idle.

Toyota replace EGR sensor, did a tuneup. No change

Thanks, Norm

I had the same problem. I had the fuel injectors cleaned (ultrasonic bath). Since then everything is o.k.

You're describing a classic symptom of an EGR valve sticking open after long periods of driving. Was the EGR system serviced and cleaned in addition to the EGR position sensor replacement?

Could be a dirty throttle body. I've had that a few times on different cars. Easy to fix. Simply take off the air cleaner, spray throttle body cleaner (or fuel injector cleaner) spray into it, wipe out and repeat until the gunk is all out. You can do this with the engine running to get the injectors clean too.

Even if this isn't the problem, for the 2 bucks for the spray can, it's worth doing.

They cleaned my injectors and it didn't help.

I thought it was EGR. I think they may have only replaced the sensor. They tell me that it may be the idle controller, but they aren't sure and it is $500 to replace it.
