Hi! I have a 93 Camry that stalls at traffic lights after it gets hot. First the rpm starts going up and down and eventually the engine chokes. So far I tried changing the MAP and Coolant Tmp Sensors and the distributer. Does anyone have another idea? I appreciate your help. Thanks.
Mine does that with the aircon on, but doesn't quite stall. Also does it down hills in ODrive as if brakes are being applied/released but I think that's an OD problem. I suspect the aircon fast idle is at least part of problem but it's $175AUS ex Japan...
No, but I read in other posts that this didn't solve the problem. It is temperature dependent and it happens only at idle so I really believed the CTS would fix it as it did for other people.
Just a guess, but you might want to look at the idle air control valve. On the Camry the idle is set by the computer. It reads the engine speed and sends signals to a "step motor" inside the idle air control valve to change the position of a small internal drum to vary the air flow past the closed throttle valve. With the fluctuating idle, sounds like that would be something to check. Only thing I've found, is sometimes the valve gets stuck and a spray of TriFlow has restored it for me, but I've only experienced the problem on a cold engine, where it doesn't open fully. IIRC the factory service manual lists a resistance check, so you might start there.
Spray carb cleaner thru the tiny holes at the bottom of the air intake just before the butterfly. Take the big air intake hose off and you will see where two rubber hoses connect on the outside of the intake, the holes go straight thru to the inside. The holes get carboned up and just need cleaning.
Cheap solution: try checking the EGR vacuum modulator filter. It's a little filter inside a black part that looks like a flying saucer, towards the back (looking under the hood). It has 3 black hoses leading to it: two on one side, one on the other. Pop the top off.
I have (had?) a stalling problem on my '96 camry. Tried a bunch of things [throttle plate cleaning, IAC valve cleaning, ...] I finally looked at the EGR modulator filter, which was falling apart on me, and had two scorch marks on the rough part of the filter. Removed the rough part, re-attached the fluffy parts, and so far so good... ;)
fyi, I hear that you can't anymore buy just the filter - you have to buy a whole new EGR modulator, if you want new parts.
