Tire chains

Looking to buy some tire chains to get me around this winter, since I plan to hit some places that require them both legally and intelligently.

There are a lot of types available, so I'd like to hear people's experiences with them. Trying to avoid popping a link on a switchback.

The best are the diamond type. Regular cross-link chains are OK. Cables have worked OK for me, and I don't know if the Z-cables are any advantage.

I got tired of the chains that are a pain to put on, need to be checked and adjusted every few miles, like to tear out your brake lines and sometimes beat your wheel wells. I tried the cables too and didn't like them either.

I bought a set of Spikes-Spider and wonder how I ever got along without them. They take about 30 seconds per wheel to put on and work as well or better than chains/cables. They are expensive but I forgot about that the first time I needed them and put them on in 20 degree and snowing weather. What a pleasure.

I have used the Z-chains, they are quite nice. Only used them once in deep snow and was able to put them on while buried to the axles w/o moving the truck. They come apart in two places in back and one place in front so are very easy to get over the tire.

Also, with the diagonal criss-crossing of the cables, there never seems to be a portion of tire contacting the ground without also having the cable underneath.
