Turn signal confussion

Hi RAMVA!! it's been a long while since my last post. I've been away from my bugs for a while, two are gone, and a new one is here to replace them.

There's a confusion that's been bothering me for a while. The new bug is a one owner 71 beetle STD. that it's just well taken care of except for the turn signal and taillight lenses. I've been checking out ACN's site for those, and it says that the turn signal lenses are the same for 70-79 bugs and beetles. I got an old lens from the 73 super, and it is considerably larger than the ones on the standard. Which one has the right lenses? I'd love to keep the same lens size it has now (smaller). If that's not the oem size, what should I order?

TIA for all your help. Karls

Does the part on the Super look like this part:

If so, I'm guessing that the "Standard" Beetles were hanging on to an earlier design for turn signals... probably the ones just before 70-79 so likely this one from '64 to '69?

or this one '58 to '63 (amber lens also available by the way)?

Before that, it was the bullet signal and I'm sure you don't have that one!

The US got the ridiculously large front turn signals. The rest of the world got the "normal" size, that is not open top the side of the housing. (The US lense runs around the side of the turn signal housing too, the Euro version does not)

Just a couple of months ago I gave away 5-6 perfect sets, with spotless chrome included. Tough luck ;)

That's the US export model. Not exclusive to supers either.

This is the "Euro" version that was in use from the early 60's up until

75, when the front turn signal was moved from on top of the fender to the bumper.

Yea, that's the early model.

Before that it was fixed light housings in place of semaphores, ("Elephant's ears") and before those they had functional semaphores. Europe didn't get bullet turn signals, I think. That's another US only item.

Perfect. The super is a US 1303S and it's exactly like that one. The Standard is a german 71 and it's using the pre-70 style lens...so i'll just order those.

Thanks a lot. Karls

Sorry!

I gave away stuff for free, several people with vans, trailers etc. kept coming over to my house to haul stuff away for a WEEK. Every day.

I gave all the Volkswagen parts I had that I didn't need for my current cars immediately.

I got pissed at all the junk taking space and everything going wrong.

The garage is still full of junk.

Yeppers -- the US began requiring side markers and reflectors fore and aft beginning with the '68 model year. VW complied by modifying the front fender assemblies and tacking trapeziodal reflectors on the rear lamp assemblies on the Beetle. For Ghias and Transporters, they added wraparound front lamps and tacked on after-market-looking round reflectors onto the rear fenders. The existing lamps already had enough light visible from the side to pass muster.
