hi there, just bought a 1991 Jimmy 4x4 SUV. No instructions on the 4wd. Does the switch from 2wd to 4wd happen at a stop? Does the vehicle have to be in motion?

Correction, slow down to about 3 MPH, put the truck in neutral and make the shift.
Here's the instructions:
You can shift from 2 WHEEL to 4 HIGH or from 4 HIGH to 2 WHEEL without pressing the shift button. Your front axle will engage faser if you take your foot off the gas pedal for a few seconds after you shift
To shift into or out of 4 LOW or N
- Stop your vehicle and shift tranmission into neutral.
- Press the transfer case shift lever button, and shift in one continuous motion. Don't pause in N as you shift into 4 LOW or your gears could clash
