86 S10 4x4 noise

Jul 14, 2006 1 Replies

On my 86 S10 4wd there is a loud clicking noise coming from the front axle. It doesnt matter what gear or neutral the trans or transfer case is in. Nothing changes it. Brakes and tires/wheels have been changed over time. No change. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you for any ideas

Probably CV joint(s), or front differential. Remember on an S-10, the front axles and differential spin all the time, regardless of 2or4wd. Only the front propshaft stops in 2w. (That's part of how shift on fly works, the connect/disconnect occurs in the front differential) If you can, lift/jack both front wheels off ground, manually turn wheels, source of clicking should be fairly obvious.
