Strange knocking noise LT35 Diesel

Its only happened three times over the last couple of days- but it sounds very loud and expensive!

Coming from around the engine bay somewhere-Engine starts and idles as normal- gear change seem fine-each time it did seem to happen when/ just after i changed gear- and going in a straight line- but not sure if that was just a coincidence- or to do with increasing revs- thought it maybe was a loose exhaust but that seems solid.- i've bounced it around a bit and it doesn't seem to be suspension/steering related

Wondering if it could be a loose engine mount- or someone has suggested a cv joint- I don't really know much about either-would there be any tell-tale signs if it was either of those?

Any help would be really appreciated

Thank you in advance regards Mike

If its the old LT 82-95 era, it might be the gear lever has swivled around and touching something. I had this on mine a few years ago. It eventually touched on something underneath and wouldn't select 4th or 5th (3rd or 4th position in normal use). Mine can still make a knocking or rumbling noise if the gear lever moves out of its happiest postion. Just a shot in the dark, but you never know your luck.

Hi Graham Cheers for that- its a '95 I'll check it out at the weekend- i'm not having any problems getting it into any of the gears but it would certainly make sense noise wise! thanks again Mike

Quick update- went out this afternon and had a mess around with the gear linkage underneath the van- no sign of it catching on anything- but i gave it a good shake anyway!- the upshot of it is- took it for a test drive and- no knocking at all- i know its early days yet and it could be back tomorrow- but fingers crossed for a positive result- just wanted to say thanks again for the advice- much appreciated regards Mike

Glad its looking promising. Does your gear lever twist through 360 like mine? If so, try twisting it so the "H" is lined up straight. If the knocking comes back then twist it 360 degrees and try that. If it can twist like mine, then it will probably have gone round many turns in normal use and might be out of its proper position. I've no idea if all LT's twist like mine, but suspect they do as a fairly unrefined and clunky old bus. Mine ended up fouling a linkage from the gear lever on the bodywork/gearbox and as I said, it eventually would not select 3rd or 4th. I thought it was going to be a big problem, but after sliding underneath while a mate moved the gear lever, I could see it was fouling.

Sometimes when starting mine from cold I hear a knocking noise like worn big ends and it turned out to be the gear level in slightly the wrong position. Just moved it a fraction while in neutral and all sounded fine.

I'll be really happy too if this has sorted it out. I love those old busses.

Hi Graham- still Ok so very hopeful!- there is no movement at all on the actual lever- but looking underneath whilst going through the gears- you can quite nicely see how it could vibrate on any number of surfaces I hope this is the answer

- the other options are a lot more expensive!-we have our(almost) annual pilgrimage to cornwall planned for july- so i am a lot more hopeful we will get there than when i was convinced it was the gearbox or something equally expensive- the old LTs have their problems - but you've gotta love em!- i don't honestly think theres anything to compare with them(for the money)- i paid =A3500 for mine- probably spent another =A3500 on doing it up- and its been everywhere with 5 people/6 bikes/numerous boards and associated cr*p- and apart from a corroded sump and this problem its never missed a beat regards Mike
