Yes, it's a very common problem. My E36 has had this problem three different times--- first time, blower motor replaced, last two incidents involved replacing resistor and capacitor respectively. Wonder what the capacitor does?

Almost certainly the final stage resistor. It is a common problem, although it looks like recent modules may have a longer life.

It's an easy enough DIY replacement although slightly awkward. Google should provide instructions.

I've thought a little about that myself. I mean, I know what capacitors do and how they work, but since I'm not an electronics circuits guy per se' I just went out and bought the cap. at stated rating, and followed the directions on the guy's excellent site for replacing it, and bingo, it fixed the problem and I've had none since! Last time I checked, the site was no longer available; too bad.
