Engine Computer Replacement/Cost

Jan 10, 2006 2 Replies
1990 525i, independent says I need a new engine computer. The "brain" seems to be telling the injectors to dump extra fuel into 3 of the cyliners and gets the car to stall out. Does anyone know how much one would be and what it would cost to do the job. He is saying that the dealer has to program it to the car. Bunk or truth? Any help would be appreciated. PS. This isn't the "computer" that shows the temp, time, mpg, etc. but the computer that runs the car's engine. Thanks

Check ebay under "BMW ECU" or "BMW DME". Yes, it does need to be programmed once installed in your car. Usually only the dealer has the necessary factory computer to do this, but an independent that has spent the money for one could also do it.
