high mileage oil choice?

Hi all...

2nd post from a newbie here. I got good advice here for my last question, so I'd like to ask everyone's advice for what brand/type of motor oil I should use. I have a '91 318is with 180k miles in the Texas climate.

thanks for your help.

At 165K miles on my 1999 323i, I'm still using the OEM BMW full synthetic oil. I'm not going to mess with success here.

For my 2000 BMW K1200RS I use Amsoil full synthetic racing oil

but that is a totally different machine.

Does your owner's manual recommend 15W-40? If so these oils are generally rated for diesel applications, as well as gasoline. They have higher concentrations of anti-wear additives, anti-oxidants etc. than gasoline only rated oils.

I've been using the recommended Castrol 15W-40 in my 97 328 since new and just love this stuff. At 122K my engine can barely be heard while cruising at 80 mph, accelerates better than when new, and uses no oil between the computer recommended change intervals that usually work out to about 7500 miles.

So unless you're a fan of synthetics, I'd go with the 15W-40 dino (again, assuming it is recommended in your owner's manual)

Frank Oh, and I'm in N. CA so we get as hot as Texas. I've run all day at high speed up I-5 with temp over 100 degrees and this oil holds up just fine.
