Does your owner's manual recommend 15W-40? If so these oils are generally
rated for diesel applications, as well as gasoline. They have higher
concentrations of anti-wear additives, anti-oxidants etc. than gasoline
only rated oils.
I've been using the recommended Castrol 15W-40 in my 97 328 since new and
just love this stuff. At 122K my engine can barely be heard while cruising
at 80 mph, accelerates better than when new, and uses no oil between the
computer recommended change intervals that usually work out to about 7500
So unless you're a fan of synthetics, I'd go with the 15W-40 dino (again,
assuming it is recommended in your owner's manual)
Oh, and I'm in N. CA so we get as hot as Texas. I've run all day at high
speed up I-5 with temp over 100 degrees and this oil holds up just fine.
