Hi, have 04 uk spec 745i with 'engine' symbol up on main dash. Handbook says emissions problem. Anyone any idea what may be causing this?

A million things - get someone to plug an OBD11 unit into the diagnostic port. Might be O2 sensors (not the phone company) or AFM.
You don't say what year or body style E38 E65 or earlier
If plain yellow - just an emissions issue, often a faulty sensor in the exhaust.
If red or flashing - panic!
Many thanx, yes the symbol is yellow - haven't noticed any difference in performance or fuel consumption - probably just making the ozone layer thinner!
