95 chevy 4.3 exchange?

Hello, I have a 1995 Chevy 1/2 ton Pk. (150,000 miles) With a vortec 4.3 and an auto transmission. I just purchased it a few weeks ago. I used it for a couple of weeks and then changed the oil. The oil that came out of it was nasty black and thick. Put the new oil and filter on it and drove it about 2 miles before it started to make a lot of noise in the top end. Before I got back to the house I could here the bottom end knocking right before it would change gears. I am assuming I need an engine. I have called around and found a couple in the 5/6 hundred range. These were 1990 to 1992 engines. Can someone tell me what years will fit in this truck. This is the engine that uses a vacuum egr valve. Thanks Dave

ooohhhh it looks like a candidate for a 350 swap!!! I can't wait for my 4.3 to blow up so I can do the swap in my 96

Did it look like gear oil maybe? Sounds like you got screwed.

I've got the 93 4.3 (pre-vortech) truck. How hard is it to swap a 350 or a 327 in it? I would like a little more umphhhh. How much would it cost? My current 4.3 has 180K on it and is just getting tired.

Don't go with shorties. It's a freekin truck not a 1/4 mile machine. Low-end torque makes a more streetable truck than high-end hp. Other than that it sounds fun.

Never said anything about racing it. Shorties fit in a stock configuration. They give me options allowing me to use stock pipes if I do not choose (or am not able to due to emissions tests) to go with the dual exhaust system
