99 K1500 Brake noise

I have a 99 GMC Suburban and have noticed lately that when stopping it seems to make a slight "clunk clunk" sound when the truck comes to a stop. It doesn't happen when first applying the brakes at speed, but when the truck comes to a stop. I can "ease" into a stop and the sound will not occur, but any kind of force (normal braking) will re-create the sound when I come to a stop. The noise seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle. Any ideas what this sound could be would be appreciated.

Thanks

First, I'd check the U-joints. Simply because it could be them and doesn't take any disassembly to inspect. Set the parking brake, put truck in neutral, then give them a good shaking in several directions. ANY slop, and I mean ANY, means they are bad. On the front one, though, you can get a little movement from the yoke in the tailshaft of the transmission, so don't confuse the two. Also, you will probably notice the clunk going back and forth from Reverse to Drive, if this is what's causing it.

My 91 was doing this. It was also pulling to the right under hard braking. I changed out the hoses ($18) and calipers ($12) on both sides. It doesn't pull or make that clunk anymore.

Karen,

Don't listen to the other responses (it's not the u-joints or brakes!). Your problem is caused by the driveshaft slip-yoke binding on the splines of the transmission output shaft. GM has a TSB (technical service bulliten) on this as it's a VERY common problem. There are two fixes:

1) Go the dealership and fork out $200 for a nickle-plated replacement yoke which cures the clunk

2) Pull the driveshaft, slop some Mobil 1 grease inside the slip yoke and reassemble. Repeat every 8-12 months.

You choose the fix! I just use the grease on mine as it's a good excuse to drop the shaft once a year and check the u-joints.

Bwhahahahaha! For Gawd's sake don't touch the brakes! As an aside, mine are still stopping quite well. I figured out where my wussy pedal is coming from (updated combo valve likes the HD master cylinder) but I'll be dammed if I'm going to touch them for at least a year. Anyone know where to dispose of 2.5 gallons of DOT3?
