are you a good machanic???

has anyone had this problem.? i just put together a small block 400 with alum heads and about 9.5 to 1 compression.with a isky 266 cam and anti pump up lifters. new edelblock 650 carb ,stock points type dist. and edelblock esp intake.the coil is a stock chevy luv 4cyl along with the rest of the eletrical.(the engine is in a 1972 chevy luc truck) heres whats happening it has ruff idel. so i pulled plug wires until i found that #1 is not fireing at idel speed. and the engine seems to miss at any RPM . but when i give it thottle it seems to rev up nicely. so a got out on the road and jumped on it and it went smooth and fast.so then i pulled over and pull the wire off #1 and tryed it again and it ran like hell. when i got back home i was ideling in driveway , its was ruff so i pulled #1 again on and off a few times and i cant tell the diff. so it is not fireing at idel. then i took the value cover off and made sure the lash was right i even set it loose a little. then i took a compression check and had a good 150lbs. still ruff idel no power in #1 so then i try changeing the spark plug wires with other cyl that was strong and that didnt work. tryed a new spark plug. no luck.. i noticed when i took the plug out each time it was wet. so i tryed playing with carb idel mixture thinking it was to rich so i leaned it out and still didnt pick up that cyl. i am going nuts here could a good machinic please help me with some suggestions thanks eric

How about a cracked distributor cap?

Let's start with the basics:

Your plug is wet because it's not firing. Bad plug wire? Bad points? Point gap too wide? Cracked distributor cap? You should get a plug wire tester (light that plugs into the wire end and clips on to the spark plug - if it flashes then it's getting spark. No flash = no spark).

edelblock 650

Plug is wet because it isn't firing. Since you swapped wires and plugs I would say you have a problem at the distributor. Personally I would toss the points unit and put a newer HEI unit in it. MUCH better at firing plugs in a high compression engine. IF you have clearance issues a little use of a rubber hammer on the firewall will take care of it. Or find a small cap unit (not as good since they crossfire easier than the large cap). Swapping would give you the benefits of NO points to adjust and a hotter spark over the points system. If you swap remember that the factory points wiring has a resistor in the wiring that drops the voltage to the points. You need to remove that for the HEI to receive full voltage.

Little cam in the dist. not openning the gap on the points good at #1?

Cap?

In line with what others have suggested, if you don't own a spark tester, you can use somethting as simple as a timing light to check for spark delivery to the plug. Hook the pickup to the #1 wire and see if the light flashes on. Gas 'er up and see if it flashes.

If you don't have a high ROM engine, I also suggest switching to just a basic HEI dist. They are much more hassle free (no fooling with the points) and work great up to ~4500 RPMs. THey flatten out a bit over that though. Different ignition modules can be purchased to help with that.

Check to make sure the distributer cap is not cracked. You may want to get a v-8 coil too. (burns a little hotter) make sure you are bringing # 1 up on the compression stroke too. With a 266 cam, and the compression you have, the idle will be a little ruff, but the wet plug tells me it isn?t getting any fire. Check the cap as stated first, then the timing, then the wires and plugs. Hope this helps some :)
