After over fifty five years in the busuness I an assuew you the experances of others is a useless tool to determine if the vehicle you buy will be reliable or not, once YOU purchase ONE. When one buys a used vehicle there is no way one can know for sure how that one particular vehicle was used or aboused or if it was maintained properly or not, no mater who made that particualar vehicle, since every manufacture makes some that are not up to snuff. The best way to choose a vehicle is to forget who made it, and judge the ONE you intend to buy .

I have to disagree with you on whether or not the experiences of others is valuable.

If you were buying a 1987 model car, do you really think that a Yugo would be as likely to go as far as a 1987 Honda Civic or a Ford Taurus?

While you're correct that one can't always determine how well a car is maintained, each vehicle model has specific limitations. If bought an Oldsmobile Cutlass Diesel, no matter how well you maintained it, chances are that you would run into problems because of the limitations of the diesel engine (although some of the engine lasted a long time). Likewise, if you bought a used 1987 Ford Taurus, your chances of having many trouble-free miles is higher than if you bought a 1985 Olds Cutlass Ciera with the diesel engine or a '87 Yugo.

Well maintained automobiles have limitations on how long they last.

If you buy a used car model that doesn't last long, it's not going to last as long as a used car that is a model that does last long.

IMHO, what you're saying is that how reliable a vehicle is has nothing to do with how long it will last when you buy it used.

You are free to believe whatever you chose, but you are fool if you think that every new car of every brand is the same and even more of a fool if you believe they are the same after being used for thousands of miles, by thousands of differant buyers, in innumerable differant circustances, go back in you hole dummy

First, you should not be calling other people "dummy." Pot meet kettle.

Second, different models, will last different lengths of time. For example, if you buy a used Toyota model with the known sludging problem, you will have a lower chance of having a car that will go the long distance without a major repair.

In the field of medicine, it's impossible to predict how long one will live. However, on average, one who eats well, exercises, doesn't smoke, keeps his/her weight down, will live longer than someone who is fat, eats like a pig, doesn't exercise and smokes like a chimney. On average.

If there are two cars, model a and model b, and you know that model a lasts longer than model b, on average, then the particular car that is a model a will probably last longer than the particular car that is a model b.

The key words are "on average" and "probably."

If you buy a 1987 Yugo and a 1987 Corolla, chances are that the Corolla will be running long after the Yugo.

You're totally correct that you can't say for sure. But, that doesn't mean that knowing the durability of particular model doesn't add useful information, either.

You're such an asshole that you couldn't even figure out that I was agreeing with you in principle with additional reasons.

Now f*ck off and climb back under whatever rock you climbed out from under.
