Thanks for the reply. Yes, I hope it'll prove as durable as the many fords I've had. I know it rides a lot nicer, and has a "bell and whistles" interior.

Oh, it's not just an opinion. there's a reason they're #3. (and always have been)

But #1 in trucks.

No, it's true. Chevy replaced his engine and that garbae did the same thing.

yah ok, dream on. #1 in service returns maybe.

Oh really? uny as DC has not been posting losses or decreases in sales like GM and Ford have been doing.

Ghee, didn't GM announce 10,000 layoffs?

I just bought my first GMC too. It is a 68 3/4 ton custom camper with a 396 and a long bed. Lots of pulling power, and a trailer hitch which would put most new trucks to shame. Lot cheaper than buying new, and they are so easy to work on. NO emission BS!!! Of course it only gets about 12-14 MPG whether I am towing something or not, but I only drive it when I need too.

Hmm.I know a guy in CA that was selling that same model. Is it green?

White. Still has original paint (actually original everything). Got it in Wichita KS from a car buff who gave me the original carb for it too, said he didn't have time to do what he wanted with it, I think he just bought it for the engine. I even found the original build sheet stuck in the springs behind the seat. I had to tape it all back together and it is missing pieces, but it does show the options list. Restorable (but I am just going to fix it up and drive it), a little rust here and there, fortunately my house has a garage! I Didn't mention it also has a couple of extra fuel tanks. Whoever owned it originally used it pretty good because it has it's fair share of dings and dents, but must have kept it maintained pretty good too. So far I have had to replace the tranny (but he told me it needed replacing when I bought it, so I don't feel too bad, at least I could do it myself with a little help from my buddy who works at a car shop, and I found a used th400 for 200 bucks), the starter solenoid, and I am having the original carb rebuilt by a seasoned quadrajet man. Other than that though I have only changed all the fluids and the points/cap/rotor/plugs. Engine runs fine except the carb that was on it when I bought it was a quad off a '76 something and it needed rebuilding really bad because the engine wasn't getting fuel consistantly, and it is not metered correctly for this engine, I am having the original built instead (in fact on ebay these carbs are CHEAP! I might get another one just for the hell of it.). Should be able to pick it up tomorrow, I have to wait because the gasket for the intake had to be special ordered (can't be found anywhere, so I got two). I'll end up rebuilding that 76 carb too, than I'll have a back-up! Maybe my mileage will go up a notch when I get my carb back too! Not bad for a thousand bucks!

BUY USED!!!!! lol H

The guy in CA got his truck from his grandfather. That truck was all original and very good condition.

I think he wanted 2-3k for it.

Well I got my carb back. Man what a difference!! Like a brand new engine! Go Go Quadrajet!!!

H.

Are you enjoying your fuel economy of gallons per mile?

Very responsive now. A properly set up Q-jet is a good thing. And this one is metered just right. Only thing I can not really figure out is how to adjust the manual choke. There is too much play in it, and the air valves over the primaries are either shut all the way or open about half way. I figured if I pulled the choke all the way CLOSED than there should still be a small gap between the air valve and airhorn. I'll have to play with it. But it runs pretty good without the choke anyway now. A lot better than before. Still have not gone for a really long drive yet. Been too busy with my kid and trying to sell stuff on Ebay. And no, I am not trying to sell my kid on Ebay in case you did not read the above correctly. lol....

Lol!!! Oh, waitaminute, that isn't supposed to be funny...

A quadrajet is one of the most economical carbs ever made. Due to it's small primary bores, they'll only put the gas away if you open up the secondaries. The quadrajet is also probably THE best spreadbore carb ever made. Most people who cuss them don't know a thing about how to adjust and tune them.

I just took a trip to my friends house, and I am getting about 19 mpg on the freeway! I say hell yeah! Ton better than before! Not bad for a 396 in a 3/4 ton truck. Down with emissions!

Oh, and I know how to tune them... I got AU secondary rods now, but may go to AX for more power. They both open at 70% of the secondary opening, but the AU stays the same thickness throughout the rest of the secondary opening all the way to 100%. The AX gets narrower progressively all the way to 90% allowing more fuel flow. I had AX's in the previous carb and they lit my engine up.

Well I figured out the choke operation. It was too easy. You set the choke by depressing the gas all the way, then pulling the choke all the way out (setting it up on the third step). Release the gas and then push the choke back in to open the primary air valve a bit or a lot depending on how much air you need. So long as I stay off the gas the choke stays on the third step. Moving the choke all the way in or out does not kick the choke off of the third step. Barely touching the gas does. Easy!

Ummm, I meant to say second step in each of the sentences up there.
