fuel gauge replacement

I've had a 90 GMC for less than a year now and have ran out of gas three times and almost ran out several other times. I don't know what it is... haven't ran out of gas in 20 years... has to be something about the gauge placement. Or, I've been driving Fords for a long time... maybe I got used to looking in the bottom left instead of the top right. Dunno.

Anyway, I was thinking about putting an aftermarket gauge on it like this 2" Sunpro from J. C. Whitney:

Can something like that just be connected to the current sending unit?

Hi!

He he he he...not quite on a GM...from what I've heard (and personal experience bears this out on every GM truck I've driven) empty is indicated before the truck is truly out of fuel.

The most daring thing I've ever done was to take my dad's '94 C1500 with

4.3V6 about 20 miles out of town. When I got to my destination the gauge was hanging below the red. Of course I got gas immediately then. I was already pressing my usual luck to have gotten there. :-)

:) I've gotten a lot of that from my buddies! It's not that the gauge isn't accurate... it's just in a bad spot IMO. Would like to relocate it.
