My mileage is more like 16 - 18 mpg around town, 20 on highway, with same exact truck.
Its going to be less than that, the 2.2L gets 21 around town with the auto and I never got more than 22 highway with mine. The manual transmission gets better milage.
Best I've ever seen on my S-10 (2000, 4.3, auto, standard cab) is 21 HWY. Around town, 16 or so. Very similar to yours.
My 2003 S-10 4.3 auto got 23 on the HWY under good conditions and 17 to
19 in town.James
2001 S-10 LS 2door, automatic = 17 mpg hwy
Thanks to all who replied. Those numbers make more sense to me.

My 2000 Sonoma got 18-19 in town and barely 22 on the highway. That's VERY pathetic for a 4 cylinder. Considering my '89 Caprice with a 5.0L V8 gets 26-27 MPG on the highway. I really don't see the benefit to these little trucks anymore.

Perhaps manueveability on narrow congested streets and restricted parking spaces?
Not worth the same mileage as a full sized chevy pickup. Less room same mileage. My company 2001 S-10 4x4 was terrible on gas. I even took it in after the first month to ask what could be wrong. The dealer said nothing was wrong and don't expect the milage to increase. My full sized pickup does as well or better and my 2.8 v6 and straight6 4 liter jeep Cherokees were much better.
I can't see how it could be better as far as manuverability either. It is only "slightly" better than a full sized pickup for handling and way below a Jeep Cherokee.
As for comfort the S-10 was a lousy fit compared to any vehicle other than a Dodge Intrepid I had to drive as a company vehicle.
Making the most of manuverability and parking are learned skills
Just my personal experiences...yours may be different.

I get 27 and sometimes 28 on the highway with my 1996 4 cylinder 2wd S-10 truck. I check it every tankfull and the lowest I have ever gotten around town is 19. Always keep it tuned up and drive like an old fart. Also, it has Walmart hubcaps.

I did a 3 year lease on it. Averaged 16 mpg City, 18 mpg Highway. Tried everything to get better mileage, splitfire plugs, Bosh Platnum+4's, K&N FIPK, K&N drop-in filters, synthetic oil... Never managed to get any better than 16 mpg city average.
If I babied it around town it would do 17 mpg, if I drove it fast, it would get 16...
I also leased a '03 Blazer LS 4x4 with the 4.3 after the lease on the pickup was over. I averaged 15.5 mpg with that.
I have a '00 Jeep Grand Cherokee now with the straight 6 4.0, and I average 18 mpg driving the same route that I averaged 16/15.5 with the Chevy's.
