My mother has a 1990 New Yorker. She is 82 and if she maybe drives 15 miles in a week. She called me a month ago saying something was wrong with it. I have two bad shoulders so the repairs I can do are limited.
I told her it needed a new belt and pulley. She had a local independent shop pick it up. They replace the belt, pulley, and water pump. She did not approve them to do the water pump. This same shop wanted to replace the WP and power steering pump a year ago when I found the problem was the rack, and had it fixed by a shop where I live. No idea why she took it back to them.
Anyways she got the car back and it stalls on her while driving it. She called this shop and they said it needed a new computer, saying its not storing any information. I looked at it today. Its easy to see the plugs and wires need to be replaced. When I tap lightly on the throttle body the car dies. The check engine light stays on. I disconnected the battery and when I reconnected it the light was not on. After a minute of running the light came back on. My thinking is this light would not come on if the computer was not storing information. Is my thinking right. I cant see putting $500 in a computer.
