2000 Voyager - intermittent electrical issue

Like another poster I have a symptom with my headlights (but I didn't have the catastrophic melting event.) Here's my situation which manifests itself in 2 symptoms which may or may not be related:

When I turn the headlights off sometimes the lights will remain on. Rotating the switch to on and then off solves the problem.

When opening the door the light that highlights where the ignition key is to be inserted does not come on.

Both symptoms are intermittent.

Does anyone have any similar experience or any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

Thanks for any tips.

To clarify Tim's response on the auto-shut off headlights, it depends on the order of your actions whether the headlights stay on or not. Turn off the headlights, then shut down the ignition switch and the lights should go off rights away. Turn off the ignition first, then switch the headlamps off and you get 60 seconds? of light before they should go off automatically. This feature should be well documented in your owner's manual and operates in a similar manner on almost all Chrysler equipped vehicles made in the last 20? or so years.

Tim and Bob,

Thank you. That indeed is the solution to me headlight concern.

This was a used car purchase and unfortunately the seller did not have the owner's manual :-( a condition which usually cancels my interest as a buyer but the car was a good deal. I don't think my 1990 Voyager had this feature FWIW.

But the light on the ignition switch is still intermittent but it is on now and it is not as big an issue.

Thanks again.

As Tim suggested, there is a push on connector inside the steering column that goes to the illuminated ring. Make sure the connector terminals are clean and tight. Some electrical contact cleaner might help. This is fairly easy to get to. Three Phillips screws to remove the column top and bottom covers on the newer models. Think its the same for the older one too. If it is the ring itself, it should be a fairly easy fix, but I thought this was an LED (I may be wrong) so should be the connector.

Good luck.
