94 NewYorker unnecessary roughness

Hello....thought I'd get some feedback here before I take my car to the station.

Two/three weeks ago I noticed a roughness or hesitation while driving. It usually appears when taking my foot off the gas or while driving at slower speeds, say 30-45 mph. Then a few days ago my check engine light came on once and stayed lit til I parked. The check engine light didn't come on again til last night driving home.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction as to what I should look at?

It would be much appreciated.

Thanks Jeannie

Jeannie,

If the check engine light stayed on, then you can provide us more information by using the vehicle's self diagnostics and posting the result here. To find the trouble code or codes, you turn the ignition key to the on (but do not start the car) position, then switch off, then repeat this quickly two more times. If you do this correctly and leave the key in the On position, you should see the vehicle's service engine light flash. The flashing is giving whatever 2 digit codes are stored in the computer. If there is no trouble, then the vehicle will flash five times, then a short delay, then five more times. This is a code 55 which means end of codes. You should see something that resembles a 12, then some other two digit code(s), then the 55. Post what you get here.

Also, please provide some additional information that will assist in providing a diagnosis and further recommendations. At the minimum, include the vehicle mileage, maintenance history (when was it last tuned), and any other relevant info such as whether it burns a lot of oil, etc. Also let us know if you or someone you know is handy and can do whatever work is needed or if you are just looking to get info before you take it in to a service center.

People on this newsgroup are very knowledgeable and will help you to determine what you need to do next.
