Should tires be replaced just becuase they are old ?

If they are crazed or crumbly or have any visible deterioration then yes. If not and they look fine then theres no reason to unless you are unhappy with the grip levels. Older tyres dry out and get a bit harder generally and dont grip quite as well.

Yes, particularly if you live in a hot climate. A couple of years ago, I had a complete tread separation (i.e. the entire tread came off the tire in one big piece) on some old-but-lots-of-tread tires on my Newport; it destroyed my right rear fender skirt.

Sheer exposure to years of UV and Ozone will destroy tires.

As Burgeman said if they look good they may be OK, particularly if the car has been garaged and you don't do highway driving. On the other hand I've learned to change my tires at 7 or 8 years because I've had tire failures in hot weather on highway drives, even with Michelins. They usually have around 60K miles at that time. If you just chug around town you should have no problem.

It's my wife's car. It doesn't come out of the garage when it rains or snows. It gets used around town and for a single annual vacation.

I don't know if I've ever had tires 7 or 8 years. I'm no expert but a few things cause me to change tires. In addition to tread wear you can have weathered and cracked side walls, bulges in the side walls, slow leaks and tires that have started making noise. If none of those complaints exist, I'd keep using them.
