Strange downshift yesterday

Hoping to get some ideas on what happened yesterday on the way home form work while driving my 95 New Yorker.

Was going maybe 35 or 40 and let my foot off the gas to coast. The Car downshifted into first or second, I can't be sure. The gear selection indicator on the dash showed reverse! I was definately not in reverse. I slowed down and drove about 100 yards until I could pull off the road and park. I put it in park, back in drive, neutral, reverse etc and the indicator still showed reverse.

Sat there a few minutes, decided it was time to try it out to see if I could get home. Got the car up to about 25 MPH without winding it out too much and then it shifted into the proper gear and the selection indicator went back to drive and it ran smooth all the way home.

Any thoughts? I drove it to work this morning and there was just one "incident" where the car kind of shuddered for one second but then worked ok. I obviously have a problem and won't be driving it once I get home until it has been fixed.

There are no codes available via the check engine light.

Thanks for any ideas.
