A-series block dimensions

Does anyone happen to know the difference in block length between small bore and big bore A-series? I need to fit a spider drive oil pump and have to make a spacer (can't find anyone who sells the spacer).

BMC type A I assume!

are the same length as per mini.

Just a question

Isn't the spider or the other oil pump drives dictated by the cam coupling?

AFAIAA they are the same length. The smaller the bore, the more space there is between the pots. I assume you have a spider drive camshaft otherwise you wouldn't be trying to fit a spider drive pump?

Yes it's BMC A-series. The question is not about the drive - I already have the spider adapter. It's about the small bore block being too short for the cam and pump combination I am using. Somewhere I saw a spacer plate being sold but can't remember where. I can always make one I suppose but this is all taking too long as it is!

The blocks are the same length. a 1275 motor will fit on a 998 gearbox in a mini.

Ill go have a look tomorrow in the shed and see what the difference is with the oil pumps/cams - but its not the length of the block and its if the oil pump fits the cam.

There is slightly more metal on the back of the big bore block. EG if you fit a Metro cam and oil pump to a small bore block you have to shorten the drive dog on the pump. Can't do this with spider drive so have to space out the pump. I have the spider drive cam because it was very very cheap on Ebay!

It's about 5 or 6 mm from memory but it should be easy enough to calculate by putting the spider in the cam, fitting the pump and measuring the gap. I'm sure the Mini specialists like Minispares will still sell the spacers. You may also have to drill and tap the block and/or pump for extra bolts depending on how many bolts your block and pump use. There are 2, 3 and 4 bolt variants.

It would have been easier to get a pin or slot drive cam for a small bore engine.

I'm not at all sure why women like men. We're argumentative, childish, unsociable and extremely unappealing naked. I'm quite grateful they do though.

Yes it would have been easier to get the right cam but I could not resist a Piper Magnum 270 for £7! Good nick too - and it is genuine, I've checked the lift and timing. Anyway, I'll do what you say and measure the gap. I'm sure you are right that Minispares used to sell the spacer but not any more. Neither do Minisport.

You could also go to your friendly local parts factor and ask to see a small bore and big bore pin drive pump. Measure both from the flange to the end of the pin and the difference is your spacer thickness.
