I just bought myself a used Sykes Pickavant 4 gas exhaust analyser for Christmas.
It seems to be working OK, but I would like to check the calibration.
Where can I buy a small quantity of standard gas for calibration?
regards, mike

afaik it is only availiable as MOT gas from BOC etc. I know cos it's my job to calibrate gas analysers !
Of course having the gas is only a check, to adjust it you need the service manual.
If it's just a check why not go to the local MOT station and put the analyser up a car at the same time as the stations machine, MOT stations have their machines checked regularly so should be correct.

Not too fresh. It relies on the average CO content of air being 2%.
Would you like to set up my Sun analyser, in Essex ?

No problem calibrating it but it's a 3 hour drive !
Chris
This analyser will calibrate itself (you just type in the quanities of each component of the standard gas mixture).
I have always had trouble even persuading an MOT station to do an emssions test on a pre-catalyst car.
thanks, Mike
... but surely that is part of the MOT test. If you are not getting one then report them.
Chris
It depends on the age of the car. Pre-1974 I don't think anything more than a visual check of the exhaust emissions is required. For 1974 and later, there is an MOT emissions standard for cars without a catalyst, and the garage must test it as part of the MOT.
That said, my local MOT station is happy to do an emissions test to let me know if my cars (both pre-74) are going out of tune, but this is not part of the MOT test and if it is out, it is not a failure.
