Thanks all for the advice - bought a compressor that fits inside the coil, dropped the ball-joint end of the lower control arm rather than the chassis end, and have now replaced one of the coils! should get the other one done tomorrow... have to move the car around in the garage to get to the other side easily.
Not too hard a job really, once you have the right tools & some good advice.
