Presumably a 1622, and the same for any car that used it?

So it would be the same engine for a 1622 MGA too?

I'd say so. I used an Austin 1800 short engine to fix a blown up MGB, and I couldn't find any difference. Although in those days they used different part numbers.

From a manual my dad has, it seems the engine was also used in the following cars:
Austin A60 Morris Oxford V1 MG Magnette 1V Riley 4/72 Wolseley

All of which were badge-engineered versions of the same car. But let's not forget that this engine also started life with a smaller 1588 capacity in the same cars and ended up close to 1800 in the Marina. I've got a nice 1622 stored in my yard.

It actually can be traced back to the Austin A40 1200cc of the late '40s - the external dimensions of the block are identical. There was a strange amateur racing group that specified this engine - a bit like the formulae 750 that used Austin Seven engines - but allowed any internal modifications you fancied. And many managed to overbore and fit the internals of a 3 bearing 1800 MGB unit.
FWIW, I don't think the 1588cc was fitted to any saloon car - it was an overbored version of the 1489? using the same crank and conrods - and only used in the MGA 1600 Mk1, and *very* fragile. The 1622 had a much stronger crank and conrods.

Hi Chris,
I Think the 1489C.C was before the 1622C.C In the Higher fined version of the same cars. (Austin A55MKII Cambridge, Morris Oxford Series V, Riley 4,68 and MG Magnette)
Also the Riley 4/72 and MG farinas had a high compersion version of the
1622c.c.. with twim SU HS4 carbs instead of single SU HS2 carbs on the Austin, Morris and wolseley.ALL THE BEST. George

So what was the difference between that engines and those 1622 engines used in the MKII MGA's? Apart from being painted Maroon of course :-)
