"For Life" cooling system additive

My Rover P4 came with its cooling system containing this product. The was a label with a wire twist attached to the overflow pipe.

As I needed to top up the cooling system and not being able to find the product anywhere it was replaced with conventional anti-freeze.

It has really left the cooling system in superb condition.

However, I wonder if anybody on the newsgroup has ever heard of the product? Also does anybody know if it is still available?

Regards.

Its very well known in Toyota MR2 circles, and recommended by Toyota - being a mid-engined car, there are some long hose runs.

From their FAQs: Toyota Forlife Engine coolant is standard for all MR2s, costing around £15 for 4 litres pre-mixed. A coolant change at the 48,000 mile 'C' service is advised in the servicing schedule. The Toyota branded 'Forlife' coolant is Ribena red initially, and with age it turns from red to brown, then muddy brown for very old coolant.

Toyota main dealers sell an antifreeze product called "ForLife". Don't know if it's the same stuff, but it is what Toyota recommend.

It used to be available from MG Owners Club.

AFAIK, it's a propylene-glycol based fluid. (Ordinary antifreeze is Ethylene-Glycol based.)

I have it in my Herald - very good for spotting leaks - and we've had a few, now got a nice new rad and all is well again. I bought mine from the Triumph Sports Six Club. Here are the details from the can - "4-Life is distributed in the UK by Promapac, Cambridge, CB4 5QZ Tel 01954 231668" If you find a UK distributor let me know, the TSSC isn't the cheapest for many things :-)

My Ford Ka uses a long life anti freeze. You can get it from the Ford Dealers, but be aware that you can't mix types generally. I'll have a look at it in a bit and tell you how long it's meant to last.

I have and the TSSC used to sell it. As I am not currently a member i cant tell u if they still do but I suspect a trawl through the ads in PC wil get you a supplier. Jon

Really?

So er, how long does a Ford Ka live with that? And can the anti freeze be transferred to another car after the Ka has died?

Inquiring minds and all that...

Until it rusts away :). Buying a Ford recon engine only costs about £300, which is liable to be cheaper than getting much bodywork done with the metallic paint and that. I've just had a look at the anti freeze and it just says "long life" on it, Haynes say change it every 2 years, but I doubt they're accounting for it being long life antifreeze. FWIW, I dropped the anti freeze out when the radiator had to be disconnected a while ago, and after 3 years and 65k it looked fine.

No.

You even need to change it if you make a major change to the system, like fitting a new (and as yet unpassivated) radiator.
