hiring a sports car

Apologies if this is the wrong group :) Feel free to point etc. We are interested in hiring a sports car to drive from the UK to Italy (attending a wedding) and back again. Anyone done this? Classic would be nice but modern will do (Porsche being preferred). I would actually prefer to get on the ferry etc. and hire a left hooker in France; I find it easier to drive a 'local' car rather than be on the wrong side if you see what I mean

Classic just won't be possible. In the unlikely event that it is I doubt you'll find it economic.

I'd say the same goes for Porsches and the like - you can hire them, but invariably they only come with a small amount of 'inclusive' miles after which you'll have to cough up for every mile you drive.

You'ld probably be cheaper buying a decent second hand Porker and then selling it on when you get back.

Well I wasn't expecting cheap really :) Just wondered if it was possible. There are firms that will hire you classics in the UK but the ones I've contacted so far are not so keen on letting you take them abroad. The normal car hire firms just seem to have Mercedes c200's.

I really don't want to be worrying about something major happening half way there with a car I've just bought.

if you do hire, then make sure that the condition is filmed on delivery and return, or you end up 'paying' for a lot of small bits of damage that 'you' have done.

Hiring for a week or more would be expensive.

I'm thinking of setting up a register of people interested in sharing a classic or sports car. This would put people in touch with others wanting the same type of car in the same area. With three or four in a group, this could give much more use of really good car than would be possible by hiring.

Let me know if you are interested in the idea.
