OT: Transporting cars.

Can anyone recommend a firm to transport a car for me?

I thinking of buying a car but it'll need trailering from Nottingham to Bournemouth.

Alternatively, is it possible to hire something I can drive myself?

Cheers,

Martin.

I've not seen car transporter lorries for hire, and it could be tricky loading a car onto an ordinary flatbed. You can hire car transporter trailers fairly easily, at anything from £25 to £50 per day, but you'll need something fairly hefty to tow it with if you want to stay legal (That assumes you either passed your car test before 1997 or have passed a trailer test)

Very few ordinary cars are rated to tow more than 1300-1500kg. Allow say 500 kg for a smallish trailer up to 700kg for a big one, and you can see that many cars will push you over the limit. You could hire a 4x4, but the costs can be eye-watering, or you might find someone hiring Transits with towbars. Be warned that many van hire firms are utterly clueless about towing - the chance of getting an adequately-rated van, with a suitable hitch, and working electrics, is low.

There is also a bit of a knack to towing something of that size and weight, and 400 miles in a day may leave you a bit knackered if you're not used to it.

Alternatively.... you'll get a private email, since I'm only 10 miles from Nottingham

It is possible that you may be able to hire a lorry based car transporter locally. A couple of years ago I found one for £200 per day including 200 miles then X pence per mile thereafter (if my memory serves me correctly!), but they are in Leicestershire.

Trailers are OK if it's a smallish car or if you have a Range Rover or similar to tow it with.

Check yellow pages for your local van and truck hire people.

As are many that look to hire a van with towbar. For this reason the majority of reputable rental firms do not supply vehicles with tow bars. Would you loan a transit with tow bar to someone who has never pulled a trailer before. I think not. Mike.H.

Friend of mine is a freelance race/rally instructor and has a superb trailer which he's used to move a number of cars for me. Would probably be up for day's work at a fair price. Do you want me to ask him?

Only if you passed your car test prior to 1997.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the offer but I hopefully have this sorted now. Any problems and I'll get in touch.

Cheers,

Martin.

I use this one. Don't forget if a friend or you move it, you need to make sure you have insurance. You don't need to be there or you can ride shotgun with them. Guess what I did ?

Have a look in the galley and you'll see my Stratos 1st one on the third row.
